Where did the money come from?
WATDI is part of the Australia Council Make it New initiative. Is this happening in other states?
This initiative is unique to WA.Do applicants need to be WA based?
Applicants should be resident, or have been a resident in WA, within the twelve months prior to submitting proposal.Proposals may include the participation of artists who are not resident in WA.
Will it keep going after 2010?
WATDI is a two year pilot. Whilst there is no guarantee of ongoing support it is hoped that a successful model will be developed that will attract further funding.Does the Department of Culture and the Arts have anything to do with this?
Whilst DCA is supportive of the initiative, WATDI does not receive direct financial support from the Department of Culture and the Arts.Should I go for $30,000, $60,000 or $90,000 funding?
We are looking to provide what you need to make your development a success, but it is a competitive process. The development of a strong solo work might more appropriately be supported and remain competitive, targeting a $30,000 development budget, whilst it is hoped that more ambitious works related to scale of cast / production will be supported through access to a $90,000 development budget.Do I need a development partner?
Whilst having a development partner is not obligatory, applicants will need to show that they have the capacity to adequately manage the funds, and auspicing relations will be supported. The applicant may partner with any legally constituted organisation (in line with Australia Council guidelines) that has the capacity and interest in supporting their program. The partner does not have to be an arts focused organisation.
Development outcomes should clearly be vested in the vision and interest of the applicant and their artistic team. The project should not be developed to meet the need/s or vision of the development partner.
Can a 'developing partner' - say for auspicing purposes - be one of the organisations behind the initiative, ie Artrage, the Blue Room or PICA? If so, at what stage could I/we talk to them about auspicing/developing?
The WADTI partners (Artrage, The Blue Room and PICA) can enter into an auspice agreement with a successful WATDI applicant, however only after WATDI funds have been offered to the project, not before.Applicants should be aware, and take into consideration, that:
- WATDI funds can be paid to an individual with an ABN;
- Auspice agreements usually attract a management/administration fee; and
- Any project granted $50,000 or over will require the preparation of certified accounts as part of its acquittal.
If an applicant is supported by or has a pre-existing partnership with any of the WATDI partners in respect of the proposal, prior to submitting an application, that WATDI partner will not participate in the decision making process in respect of that application. This is determined by the Conflict of Interest terms and conditions of the WATDI Memorandum of Understanding to which all WATDI partners have agreed and by which they are bound.
Are you eligible to apply for development funding if you have already received funding from the Australia Council for an initial incubation phase of a project but want to use the funding for second stage creative development?
Yes.Is WATDI limiting the number of applications per person/organisation/collaboration?
No, there is no limitation on the number of applications that can be submitted. Is it acceptable to WATDI to use performative 'jargon' or words and expressions that many people won't have heard of (as long as they are
explained) in the body of the application
WATDI encourages applicants to use whatever language necessary to capture the development idea, the ambitions for the development, how it relates to their practice and where they want to take it.Is it necessary to have contact or a meeting before the first round submission? If so, how?
There's no-one available to help you with your application as it'sdeveloped, but you will get ample opportunities to talk about your application directly with the panel if it is short-listed.
In the event of a successful application, is there a date from when the project can start?
Projects will be able to commence on signing of contract. Contracts will be delivered within seven days of notification. Project funds will be directly deposited into nominated management account within fourteen days of signing of contract and receipt of valid invoice. Will there be any time constraints applied to the use of funds? eg will they have to be used within the calendar year, or by the end of the financial year in which they are given.
Stage two of the application process requires artistic initiator to submit a detailed proposal including proposed time line and key milestones. Artistic intiators will be required to advise WATDI of any significant changes to project details and to submit a brief progress report to WATDI by December 31st each year until project completion.
